- Guide to Grammar and Writing
This site from Capital Community College is the most authoritative and comprehensive free resource on the web. With an index of over 400 principles of grammar and composition, plus PowerPoint presentations and interactive quizzes, this should be your first stop for lessons on just about any topic in grammar or usage.
- Sentence Sense
Another gem from CCC. The site is written in the form of an online textbook, with comprehensive chapters on every basic area of sentence structure one could possibly cover in grades 4-8. After each mini-lesson, students can practice with interactive review exercises. Registration required to use the mastery test feature.
- Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing
To infinitives, and beyond! Grammar Girl (aka Mignon Fogarty) tackles a new thorny grammar question each week. What's the difference between a dash and a colon, and when should you use which? Is "data" singular or plural?" Find out here, or subscribe to Grammar Girl's podcast.
- The Tongue Untied
From the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon, this site picks up where Sentence Sense leaves off. More advanced topics and more in-depth examples and explanations are intended for high school students and above, but the basic parts of speech are covered well. Not a bad refresher and/or reference for teachers, either.
- The Blue Book of Grammar
THE definitive source for all matters grammatical. Buy the book or subscribe to the online resources for access to lessons and interactive exercises.
- Cozy English Courses on Video and DVD
"Imagine learning grammar in front of a cozy fire with soft strains of classical music playing in the background, or on the beach while gulls and eagles soar overhead." I can't, but if you can, then these "Splashed from the River" lessons on video and DVD are for you.
